Description

While most birds are not a threat to the vegetable garden, some species find the yards as an easy place to find food. Blackbirds, starlings, crowned sparrows, finches, robins, and crows are most likely to damage vegetable crops.

Damage

Some species of birds like blackbirds, finches, and robins have been known to feed on seedlings, ripening cherries, peaches, and blueberries, and even dig holes in lawns looking for insects. The amount of damage will vary depending on the weather and native food supply that year.

Advice

  • Placing shiny objects such as old CDs, pieces of aluminum foil, or silver reflective tape in the garden or hanging them on the trees will look like eyes to birds and repellent them.
